The first test
As experienced by Mattias Carlsson
Reflecting on our two-day gravel cycling adventure from Sälen to Trysil, I'm filled with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and a deep connection to my fellow riders. This test ride, paving the way for the soon-to-be-announced 262 Scandinavian Mountains Gravel Route, was not just a physical challenge, but a journey that bonded us through shared experiences of awe, laughter, and determination.
Day 1: The Northern Route - Sälen to Trysil
Our adventure began at SkiStar Lodge Lindvallen in Sälen under a clear, promising sky. As the route chief, I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety, responsible for guiding ten riders through uncharted terrain. We embarked on a 129 km route with a daunting elevation gain of 1877 meters. The day's ride was marked by diverse segments, each presenting its unique set of challenges and rewards.
Our first major test was a steep ascent just past Västerdalälven, where we tackled a nearly 13% incline over 1 km. The effort was intense, with some questioning my route choice, but the stunning panorama atop Sälenfjällen was a just reward. Next, we wound our way through the wilderness near Fulufjället National Park, where the serenity was punctuated by occasional nervous glances for bears, adding a thrilling edge to our ride.
Crossing the border into Norway, leaving the European Union behind, brought a sense of entering the wild unknown. We rode along exquisite, "lonely" gravel roads, the landscape offering a breathtaking backdrop. The segment towards Fulufjellets Alpine Center was a blend of beauty and exertion, culminating in a refreshing break with spectacular views over Ljördalen.
As the day progressed, we encountered a stretch of narrower paths, offering a delightful twist. Åsa's comedic tumble into a mud puddle near the border, emerging with a spontaneous 'mud facial,' brought laughter and light-heartedness to our group.
The day's climax was the formidable ascent of Fageråsen. Each pedal stroke upwards, past quaint cabins and ski lifts, was a test of endurance, culminating in a breathtaking summit view. The descent along Fjellrunden was a serene counterpoint, bringing us full circle to Radisson Blue Resort Trysil. The evening was filled with relaxation, a satisfying meal, and reflections on our journey, solidifying the sense that this event would indeed be a hit.
Day 2: The Southern Route - Trysil to Sälen
Awakening to another beautiful day at Radisson Blue Resort Trysil, we were fueled by a sumptuous breakfast. The second day's route was a slightly shorter but no less challenging 133 km with an elevation gain of 1470 meters. We left Trysil on gravel roads, riding alongside the roaring Västerdalälven, which was breathtakingly beautiful.
The day's highlights included traversing the Gullia area, renowned for its fun, flowy, and spectacular gravel roads. The paths tested our technical skills, yet the exhilaration of mastering these sections was unmatched. We crossed rustic bridges and made a memorable stop in Rörbäcksnäs, a haven for mountain bikers.
The weather's unpredictability added another layer to our adventure, with sun, wind, and rain accompanying us through the stunning backside of Tandådalen, Högfjället, and Lindvallen. The changing conditions tested our resilience, but the group's spirit never waned.
As we finished our journey back at SkiStar Lodge Lindvallen, there was a collective sense of pride and joy. Over dinner, the tales of the day's ride, filled with challenges and camaraderie, were shared with laughter and a sense of achievement.
The entire journey was a testament to the beauty and potential of the Scandinavian landscape as a premier gravel biking destination. My gratitude goes to Johan, Jessica, Markus, Simon, Björn, Åsa, Madde, and our incredible service team Fredrik, Niklas, and our photographer Andreas. Your support, enthusiasm, and companionship made this journey unforgettable.
Lying in bed that night, I couldn't help but feel that this 'still un-named adventure' was going to be an international sensation. The shared experiences, the stunning vistas, and the unyielding spirit of never giving up – these were the ingredients of a truly successful gravel biking event.
Hope to see you in June 2024!
